February may be the shortest month on the calendar, but it is rich with holidays and observances across numerous cultures. One notable celebration in the US is Black History Month.
If you are still in the midst of planning Black History Month recognition and celebration within your organization, here are some here are some questions you might consider:
One excellent place to start is with the annual theme for the holiday. Did you know that each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History selects a specific point of focus for Black History Month? In a practice that dates back to the very first celebration in 1926, “the intention has never been to dictate or limit the exploration of the Black experience, but to bring to the public’s attention important developments that merit emphasis.”
This year’s theme is African Americans and the Arts — and fortunately, there is still plenty of time to dive into this vibrant area of Black history!
